Joyce Cummings

In 2010, Joyce Cummings was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease which limited her ability to exercise. This condition caused problems with her balance, muscle control, and other basic body functions. Joyce saw plenty of doctors but each one had told her the same thing: there was no cure for the disease she had. However, Joyce refused to let that get the best of her. She decided to give the local YMCA a shot. This is a story about how she has learned to live, and overcome, her Multiple Sclerosis.

Joyce becomes a member of the Sparta/White County Family YMCA in March of 2010. She began her journey by joining the Silver Sneakers group and working out on the equipment that best suited her needs. Joyce didn’t stop there though. She also decided to attend the Silver Sneakers classes that the YMCA offered in Spencer. However, as time progressed, Joyce said she had a hard time driving herself to the YMCA. She said that controlling the pedals with her feet became very difficult for her. As such, Joyce took full advantage of the assistive technology available. This technology allowed Joyce to drive exclusively with her hands. Joyce explained how happy she was to be able to drive herself to the YMCA again. She now attends Silver Sneakers classes on Mondays and Thursdays in Spencer, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays here at the Sparta YMCA. Joyce has been a member at the Sparta/White County Family YMCA for 8 years now.

Joyce Cummings is a dedicated woman who daily proves just how determined she is not to let Multiple Sclerosis overtake her. She has decided that living this lifestyle, though difficult, made her a better person in the end. As we talked she explained how much the YMCA means to her and how much it has changed her life for the better.
